Campagnoli, Bartolommeo, renowned Italian violinist; b. Cento di Ferrara, Sept. 10, 1751; d. Neustrelitz, Germany, Nov. 6,1827. He studied in Bologna with Dall’Ocha and in Florence with Nardini; for several years gave concerts in Italy; became music director to the Duke of Kurland in Dresden (1779—97); then was concertmaster at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig (1797—1818). He made several successful concert tours while in his service; from 1797 to 1818 was active as a violinist in Leipzig. He composed 41 Capricci per l’alto viola (rev, by E. Kreuz and A. Consolini as Caprices pour le viola, 1922); a Violin Concerto; etudes for violin; chamber music. He was the author of several pedagogic manuals for the violin, including Nouvelle mëthode de la mécanique progressive du jeu de violon (179]; in Eng., 1856), and Metodo per violino (1797; his chief work; publ. and reprinted in all European languages).
