Bériot, Charles (-Auguste) de, celebrated Belgian violinist, pedagogue, and composer, father of Charles-Wilfride de Be- riot; b. Louvain, Feb. 20, 1802; d. Brussels, April 8,1870. A precocious virtuoso, he played in Paris in 1821, and later toured — in England. The famous singer Maria Malibran was often a joint artist at his recitals; they became intimate in 1830, and were married in 1836, but she died as a result of a riding mishap a few months after their marriage. Bériot himself devel- - oped various ailments and had to retire from a concert career because of a paralysis of his left arm. He taught violin at the Brussels Cons. from 1843 to 1852. He wrote 10 violin concertos and 11 sets of variations for Violin, as well as numerous minor pieces of chamber music. His violin methods, Premier guide des -violonistes and Mëthode de violon (Paris, 1858), were popular pedagogical works.
